'Until today the organized sport in Germany has partly avoided coming to terms with its past during the period of National Socialism. In fact especially the 'Turnerschaft' took a leading role in voluntarily realizing the political principles of national socialst ideology. Jews and otherwise inconvenient sportsmen and sportswomen were soon excluded from the clubs after Hitler came to power in January 1933. At last it was the 'Reichssportführung' itself that tried to slow down the development, eager not to damage the image and reputation of Germany in the world prior to the Olympic Games of 1936.'
