"General Strain Theory posits that exposure to strain generates negative emotions which, especially in the case of anger, lead to delinquent behaviour. Offending marks an effort to cope with unpleasant experiences. The likelihood of responding to strain with delinquency is conditioned by several factors, among them social and personal resources. In this article, General Strain Theory is tested with data from an Austrian student survey. Special attention is paid to the role of the individual's self-esteem in the interplay of strain, anger and delinquency. Findings are generally supportive of the theory and suggest that low self-esteem operates analogous to other stressors: it produces anger and, through that, fosters offending. No evidence, however, is found for the assumption that self-esteem works as a resource which shapes the effects of strain or anger on delinquent responses." (author's abstract)... view less
