"As background to a discussion on a more up-to-date program of university-level studies, the results of a survey of first-semester psychology students (n=104) at the University of Hamburg are presented. Among other areas, students were questioned as to their general study interest, required and expected learning situations, the perceived importance of the contents of their studies, anticipated vocational fields as well as their gainful employment at the moment. In light of an expected divergence between the expectations and realities of the student experience (especially for undergraduate-students), a new strategy for the application of theoretical knowledge is proposed. Mediated by the solution of real-life problems, best developed primarily in the course of project-oriented work assignments, a more relevant learning experience will involve making use of the constructive aspects of the technical and scientific socialization process, provided that there is appropriate consultation."
