"It seems to be undoubtful that death is primarily a problem of the living. This, however, does not imply that the dead are irreversibly excluded from social life. Indeed, the subjective reference of relatives towards their deceased significant others does not turn them into life again, but rather revives memories of shared moments in the past. Seen through the eyes of a single life-world, these references are yet more important and make more impact than all the facts that the natural sciences can contribute. Even beyond the borders of physiological living, the dead remain to participate, in a way, in the social world - whereas at the same time people that are excluded from this participation can become 'socially dead' while still alive. On this basis the article aims to show that, against certain prejudices, the phenomenon of death is a matter to which sociology can deliver insights." (author's abstract)... view less
