Future urban planning and development of Hamburg has to consider mainly two challenges
that are linked with different housing mobilities and can be described with the

population growth and because the effects of the demographic change are hardly
recognizable yet. These phenomena and other processes like the increase of singlehouseholds
and housing-demands lead to ongoing housing-need. On the other hand
there is an ongoing process of segregation as a result of economic and social transformations.
Deprived areas are developing where social, structural, environmental and traffic
problems cumulate. The following article describes the requirements for the planning
and development of the growing and segregating city of Hamburg and presents efforts
on how to deal with the housing-need and the situation in deprived areas.... view less
