"Several cross-sections from the German Microcensus have been merged generating a rotating panel dataset which will provide the scientific community with a rich source of longitudinal data. However, there are problems with panel attrition due to households that moved out of the sampled areas not being tracked. The primary objective of this research is to investigate educational transitions made by highly mobile young people. Selective panel attrition is examined for three transitions: leaving the parental home, completing the second stage of academic secondary education, and completing an apprenticeship. The analyses use data from official education statistics and the IAB Employment Sample as reference statistics, and selection models are estimated. For transitions from academic secondary education the selection bias can be corrected by means of weight adjustments. However, this does not apply to transitions of apprentices from the dual system of vocational training. In addition, analyses on item stability of data on general educational certificates provide information on the data quality." (author's abstract)... view less
