(Autorenreferat)... view less

'My own time at primary school, the co-organisation of eight children's conferences as well as discussions with students demonstrated to me: contrary to claims of many adults, primary school students possess an independent opinion that they can articulate and are thus mature enough for participating in school decision-making, when they are supported and promoted by teachers. Therefore, in this article I will report of experiences I made in my own schooldays at primary school and with the children's conferences and will underscore my line of argument by referring to a 'best practice' primary school in the third district of Vienna, where class parliament, school parliament and student participation are taken for granted. In a further chapter, I will focus on opinions of education politicians about participation and codetermination of primary school students, and will question these opinions. Finally, I present recommendations for more school democracy in primary schools. Prof. Mag. Brigitte Schedl.)
