The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has repeatedly reshaped the career phase between doctoral degree and appointment to a lifetime professorship. This contribution focuses on the current implementation process of the tenure-track professorship, from the intention of higher education policy to its institutionalization at universities. Using an exploratory case study, hypotheses will be developed on how universities integrate this new job category into their institutionalized structures. For this purpose, I analyzed profile papers for the recruitment of tenure-track professors and conducted expert interviews with deans on the design of this new job category at their faculties. The contribution demonstrates that the tenure-track professorship is mainly implemented in contemporary research fields and outside the core of disciplines. One consequence may be that tenure-track professorships are reserved for peripheral areas in research and teaching. Thus, their establishment as an equal career path to lifetime professorship can be doubted.... view less
