Der Artikel untersucht die mediale Thematisierung der außerfamilialen Tagesbetreuung für Kinder unter drei Jahren in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland seit 1970. Eine dreistufige Inhaltsanalyse verdeutlicht, dass diese bis nach der Jahrtausendwende von Kritiker:innen mit sozialistischen Gesellschaftskonzeptionen assoziiert und aufgrund der vermeintlich gestörten Mutter-Kind-Beziehung negativ bewertet wurde. Mit einem massiven Anstieg der Publikationszahlen nach der Jahrtausendwende geht eine inhaltliche Neubewertung einher: Eine zunehmend ökonomisch ausgerichtete Argumentation betont die Notwendigkeit frühkindlicher Bildung und den Zugriff auf weibliche Arbeitskraft als neuen sozialinvestiven Imperativ. This article examines the media discourse on day care for children under the age of three in the Federal Republic of Germany since 1970. A three-stage content analysis shows that until after the turn of the millennium, early day care was associated by critics with socialist concepts of society and negatively evaluated because of the supposedly disturbed mother-child relationship. A massive increase in the number of publications after the turn of the millennium was accompanied by a reevaluation: an increasingly economically oriented argumentation emphasized the necessity of early childhood education and access to female labor as a new social investment imperative.
