Der jugoslawische Sukzessionskrieg der 1990er-Jahre ist fälschlich als Prototyp einer in aller Welt beobachtbaren Form des "neuen Krieges" gedeutet worden. Er kann jedoch weder hinsichtlich seiner Ursachen noch in Bezug auf seine äußere Gestalt als "neuartig" bezeichnet werden. Charakteristische Motive, Instrumente und Ausdrucksformen des Konflikts waren bereits während der Balkankriege 1912/13 sowie im Zweiten Weltkrieg gang und gäbe. Jedoch hat die besondere Medialisierung dieses ersten bewaffneten Konflikts auf europäischem Boden nach 1945 die Merkmale "informeller" Kriegsführung stärker in das Zentrum der internationalen Aufmerksamkeit gerückt. A number of analysts have viewed the Yugoslav war of succession of the 1990s as the prototype of a generation of "new wars" distinct from earlier forms of conflict. However, this article argues that this war did not significantly differ from earlier wars in the South Slav area, in terms of its protagonists, objectives, economic structures and the human impact of the conflict. Methods of warfare resemble those employed during the Balkan wars in 1912/13 and during the Second World War. Therefore, it was not the Yugoslav war as such, but the high degree of attention that international media devoted to reporting about this first military conflict on European soil after 1945 that produced new ways of perceiving and interpreting the conflict.... view less
