Symptomatic of this dispute was the bitter correspondence between Wulf and the provost of Berlin, Heinrich Grüber. Both men, who had opposed National Socialism and had been persecuted, took different sides on the debate; Grüber advocated keeping the Wannsee villa as an educational youth hostel. The article describes this personal clash and interprets it in relation to political and social discourse about National Socialism in the mid-1960s, a time when attitudes towards historical sites like the House of the Wannsee Conference were fundamentally different than they are today.... view less
