Women's movements are faced with multiple 'masculinist restoration' strategies. Taking Iraq as a case study, the article analyses, from a historical and structural perspective, how gender politics has been used by the centralizing authoritarian state of the ancien régime and is also being used by the fragmented sectarian political system of the 'new Iraq'. Both regimes are instrumentalizing women's rights in their quest for power, using different strategies and consequences. In the 'new Iraq' both domestic and gender politics have become closely interwoven with regional and international power struggles.... view less
