Über Rhythmusanalyse

Abstract

Rhythmusanalyse ist ein Begriff, der in den 1930er Jahren angedacht wurde und seit den 1990er Jahren vor allem in der französischen Denktradition intensiv diskutiert wird. Er könnte Aporien in der Zeitdebatte produktiv umgehen helfen. Rhythmus wird als "Produktion" von Zeit im Maßstab von einer Gegenwartssituation bis zur Generationenfolge verstanden und umfasst idealerweise alle einander bedingenden städtischen Zyklen. Rhythmusanalyse ist ein pluridisziplinäres Konzept für das Verstehen von kulturellen und sozialen Zeiten in Gemengelage; sie eignet sich als Grundlage für Verfahren, mit denen städtische Zeitstrukturen kritisch empirisch kontextualisiert und auf Rhythmusgerechtigkeit hin untersucht werden. Der Beitrag nimmt das "Gehen zwischen", alltägliche Gehpraxen in technisierten Umgebungen, als Beispiel für die Betrachtung der kulturellen Widerständigkeit rhythmischer städtischer Phänomene.

This article introduces the "idea" of rhythmanalysis by considering aspects of human walking, then goes back to the concepts of rhythmanalysis from the 1930s on, and uses recent contributions to outline its potential contribution to the idea of urban temporal justice. We think of walking as a kind of "bodily thinking", a capacity to cross built space not solely with the imperative of fast and economical movement and a mastery of technology, but as a cultural technique that is the very source of our urban everyday environments. Its rhythmic aspect is obvious. Barthes (2002) describes the dysrhythmic relationship of a mother who walks faster than her young boy, the image of dependence with respect to the boy and the exertion of power by the mother. He observes the failure of synchronisation of the two unequal partners and is led to formulate a concept of rhythm that underlies language as much as spatial movement. In doing so, he and subsequent authors (namely Augoyard 1979, 2017) read walking as powerful action involved in creating and designing urban environments.
