In diesem Artikel werden zwei mit hoher Regelmäßigkeit gegen Hannah Arendts politisches Denken erhobene Vorwürfe - den einer theoretischen Leerstelle hinsichtlich Institutionen und den der Unmöglichkeit der Wahrnehmung struktureller Machteffekte - entkräftet. Mittels einer Auseinandersetzung mit ihrer wenig beachteten Wesensbestimmung Politischer Theorie wird gezeigt, dass Arendt als eigenständige Vertreterin einer kritischen Theorie der Politik zu lesen ist, die zentrale Annahmen mit jüngeren Entwicklungen in der Kritischen Theorie, aber auch diskurstheoretisch und genealogisch informierter Varianten von Sozialkritik teilt.... view less

In this article two objections regularly raised against Hannah Arendt's thinking of the political are being invalidated - one suggesting that there is a blank space concerning institutions in her theory and the other alleging an impossibility to grasp the effects of structural power. Employing her widely unregarded definition of the essence of political theory, it will be shown that Arendt has to be read as an exponent of a critical political theory, who shares crucial assumptions with more recent developments in Critical Theory as well as with Discourse Analysis and genealogically informed approaches to social criticism.r time can no longer be depicted as figures of exclusion in the sense that Hannah Arendt understood them. Rather, they can best be described as "borderline" figures. The border is the specific territory of the refugees that separates the refugee from the law. Arendt emphasized the separation between refugee status and the law, that is, the fact that they were deprived of rights which they once had.
