"Mediation is a special form of conflict resolution that also has been applied in environmental conflicts, especially in the United States and Japan. Mediation has often proved to be an effective supplement or alternative to court action. In the Federal Republic of Germany, only very little experience has been made with mediation in environmental conflicts. In conflict mediation the opposing parties try to reach a consensual agreement through the help of an impartial mediator. Social science research on mediation procedures is still relatively new. Accompanying scientific analysis require an interdisciplinary approach. The issue to be studied closely link legal, political and administrative sciences as well as psychology. The following article tries to formulate some of the psychological research issues involved in this context and supply some tentative answers. Psychological reflection on the mediation process is not only legitimated from the standpoint of epistemological research interests, but also offers a means of orientation for the practical application of mediation procedures."
