This article analyses the "polarisation thesis" that dominates the literature on industrial transition in central and eastern Europe using the example of the regional distribution in the Polish industry. The analysis period was the time from 1994 to 1998. The statistical reference basis is the job statistics in industrial firms with at least 50 employees, based on the 49 voivodeships in the old regional distribution from before 1999. The survey uses: a disparity index for the regional polarisation and two concentration indexes (variation coefficient, Gini Index). Companies in Poland with foreign direct inve stment (FDI) reveal regional concentration tendencies after 1994 along with the firms exporting to western Europe and the small and medium-sized export companies with less than 200 employees. The regional distribution of employees involved in export firms reveals general polarisation tendencies. This is not the case with private firms, which have rather tended towards regional dispersion since 1994.... view less
