Der Dritte Sektor hat für den deutschen Arbeitsmarkt eine große beschäftigungspolitische Bedeutung. Im Jahr 2007 waren mehr als 2,6 Millionen Menschen hier hauptamtlich tätig. In den letzten Jahren spüren Dritte-Sektor-Organisationen einen verstärkten Wettbewerbs-, Ökonomisierungs- und Rationalisierungsdruck. Die Frage nach dessen Auswirkungen auf die Arbeits- und Beschäftigungsverhältnisse ist vor diesem Hintergrund dringend erforderlich. Das Discussion Paper untersucht Beschäftigungsstruktur, Arbeitsbedingungen und die Arbeitszufriedenheit im Dritten Sektor. Das Hauptaugenmerk liegt auf dem Vergleich von atypisch und normal Beschäftigten. Die Ergebnisse zeigen: Atypische Beschäftigungsverhältnisse sind vor allem bei Frauen und unter 30-Jährigen weit verbreitet. Die subjektive Einschätzung der Arbeitsbedingungen fällt trotz flexibler Beschäftigungsverhältnisse auf Grund intrinsischer Motive positiv aus. Dennoch werden Faktoren wie Zeitdruck, Arbeitsintensivierung und Einkommen kritisch bewertet. Insgesamt ist die Mehrheit der Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter noch mit ihrer allgemeinen Beschäftigungssituation zufrieden.... view less

The nonprofit sector is of great importance for the German labor market. In 2007, more than 2.6 million people were formally employed in this sector. In recent years, nonprofit organizations have faced increasing competitive, marketization, and rationalization pressures. How did these developments affect work and employment in the nonprofit sector? This discussion paper analyzes the employment structure, the working conditions, and the job satisfaction of employees in nonprofit organizations. It focuses especially on the comparison of atypical and standard working arrangements. I find that atypical employment is particularly prevalent among women and young workers. As a result of high levels of intrinsic motivation and identification with their work, individuals' subjective assessments of working conditions are predominantly positive despite the high level of nonstandard working arrangements.
