The nonprofit sector is of great importance for the German labor market. In 2007, more than 2.6 million people were formally employed in this sector. In recent years, nonprofit organizations have faced increasing competitive, marketization, and rationalization pressures. How did these developments affect work and employment in the nonprofit sector? This discussion paper analyzes the employment structure, the working conditions, and the job satisfaction of employees in nonprofit organizations. It focuses especially on the comparison of atypical and standard working arrangements. I find that atypical employment is particularly prevalent among women and young workers. As a result of high levels of intrinsic motivation and identification with their work, individuals' subjective assessments of working conditions are predominantly positive despite the high level of nonstandard working arrangements. The majority of employees are still satisfied with their employment situation in general.},
