"This article deals with the configuration of social relations between east-west-commuters and non-commuters by taking the Western Hungarian border community Köszeg as an exemplary instance. The analysis is based on a mixed-methods approach, combining ethnographic observation, qualitative interviews (n = 16) and an ego-centered network analysis (n = 80). The theoretical framework draws on established concepts in migration and integration research. The outcomes of the qualitative data show negative attitudes between commuters and non-commuters as well as facets of social dissociation. Furthermore, the network analysis provides an indication of a distinct milieu of commuters in Köszeg. Given the results of this explorative field study, there is incidence that commuting represents a weakening factor for social relations between commuters and non-commuters in the origin community."
