"The focus of the paper is on trust that people in West Germany have in the police and other state and non-state institutions. Nationwide surveys from 1984 to 2011 are the empirical basis. In contrast to widespread assumptions one cannot find a continuous erosion of trust over time. After the decline in trust that some institutions underwent in the late 1980s and early 1990s the respective figures have stabilized. In contrast to earlier times the police (together with the courts) are seen as a separate entity in the evaluation and not seen any more as part of the state institutions in general. In contrast to earlier times it is not the young and better educated who show the greatest distrust into the police. The relationship has diminished or even given rise to the contrary. The influence of postmaterialist values on trust into institutions has diminished." (author's abstract)... view less
