"The article contributes to qualitative research on the auditive dimension (particularly on vocality) of social practices. At the same time it demonstrates an empirical approach to reconstructing the constitution of pedagogical orders in child care centers (crèches). An introductory ethnographic note already conveys the subject and approach of this contribution in a nutshell. Then, a discussion of relevant theoretical and methodological positions is given, followed by a sketch of an auditive ethnographical approach to education (which turns the concept of 'addressing' nonmetaphorically) and some information on the overall research context and the methods of the study. The first empirical section develops the notion of speech-musical addressing practices by analyzing ethnographical fieldnotes from a luxembourgian crèche. Vocal patterns of addressing, in particular varying uses of the 'call contour', play a crucial role in developing pedagogical routines and in strengthening the practical differentiation of children and adults. The second empirical part relates these patterns to musical events in the narrower sense and points to the mutual social and socialising constitution of speech and music."
