"Nowadays researchers pay close attention to the integrative use of qualitative and quantitative methods. That follows the insight of the scientific community that onemethod-ways of analyzing phenomena are insufficient and have - at least in the social sciences - more or less only partial satisfying solutions to the consequence. The interest in complete understanding of investigated reality forced the development to multi-method-designs. This article clarifies from a historical viewpoint the research tradition of multi-method approaches: while at first the combination of methods seemed coincidental, later diverse approaches in educational research showed up reasoned, methodologically sophisticated and justified. Without a groupage of views and perspectives the well established schism between the two research traditions won't break down. Following this, the concepts are developed and discussed in relation to a complexe study and research strategy. What becomes apparent is that the distrust frequently accompanying the discussion of triangulation is counterproductive for all assumptions, because it limits the validity of conclusions unnecessarily and leads to further disintegration."
