Computer sind ein nützliches Forschungsinstrument, das Historiker erst seit einiger Zeit benutzen. Die Vorteile der Geschwindigkeit und Dichtigkeit, die Computer für analytische Studien bieten, sind bekannt. Bis zu welchem Grad jedoch gibt es eine potentielle Gefahr für die Forschung, die aus einer Behinderung durch den Mißbrauch der Technik besteht? Wenn der Historiker, der den Computer benutzt, die Probleme der Unflexibilität vermeiden will, sollte er es nicht zulassen, daß die Forschung durch den Computer oder seine Software eingeengt wird. Zuletzt sollten sich Historiker auch möglicher Konsequenzen bewußt sein, die die gegenwärtige Revolution in der Informationstechnologie auf zukünftige Forschung haben kann. (KWübers.)... view less

'Computers are a useful research tool that historians have only recently acquired. The advantages of speed and consistancy that computers can offer to analytical study are well known. Yet to what degree is there a potential danger of research becoming hindered by a misuse of technology? If the computer using historian is to avoid problems of inflexibility he should not allow research to be straight - jacketed by either the computer or its software.
