"Ethik erklärt die Etablierung und Implementierung von Normen aus individueller Vorteilsmaximierung - aber darüber hinaus auch die inhaltliche Bestimmtheit von Normen aus den Möglichkeitsbedingungen individuellem Vorteilsstrebens. 'Ökonomik' behandelt nur die beiden ersten Themen, übergeht Einsichten des strebensethischen Überlieferung und überbietet oder vollendet also 'die' überlieferte Ethik nicht." (Autorenreferat)

"Ethics, if it wants to do justice to the complex challenges involved in decision-making, i.e., if it is to be able to clarify, to explain, and predict, must explain how to (1) establish and (2) implement norms that arise out of the individual striving for benefit. Furthermore, (3) it must clarify the specific content of (these) norms that arise out of the conditions of possibility of individual striving for benefit. 'Ökonomik' deals with only the first two themes of this trial; thus, it overlooks insights already included in the traditional ethical discourse of an ethics of striving. Neither on historical nor on systematic grounds can one propose 'Ökonomik' as the apex/ climax of 'the' traditional ethics. To overestimate the achievements of 'Ökonomik' is to ignore the chances for overcoming the self-orientation of economics; at the same time, 'Ökonomik' uncovers the actual orientative power of the tradition of a descriptive ethics of striving."
