(Autorenreferat)... view less

"During the 1990s the Big Three of the German automobile industry - BMW, Daimler- Benz and Volkswagen - embarked on an enormous push for globalisation. This was quite different from the internationalisation of the Japanese automobile companies in the 1980s. It is not a simple short-run economic adjustment but rather consisted on a mutually reinforcing process of strategy and product modernisation, and a fundamental restructuring of the firms' international organisation. Some aspects of this complex overall change are analysed empirically taking the example of the Volkswagen brown field plant in Puebla/Mexico looking notably at the changed employment and procurement strategies and structures. Finally some consequences for labour policies and further research are discussed." (author's abstract)... view less
