Aufbruch der Zivilgesellschaft: zur Einordnung der friedlichen Revolution von 1989

Abstract

'Durch die Anwendung des Begriffs 'Zivilgesellschaft' auf die Entwicklung in der DDR wird die Dynamik ihrer anfänglichen Unterdrückung, ihre partielle Wiederentstehung bis zu ihrer explosionsartigen Rückmeldung und Konsolidierung veranschaulicht. Trotz der Beseitigung zivilgesellschaftlicher Werte durch die SED entwickelten sich kritische Minderheiten als Träger zivilgesellschaftlicher Werte. Im Herbst 1989 folgte ein Prozess der Selbstbefreiung, auch verbunden mit einer Wiederherstellung zivilgesellschaftlicher Formen. Teils wurden ältere Institutionen reaktiviert, teils neue geschaffen. Ein Bruch der in der friedlichen Revolution entstandenen zivilgesellschaftlichen Strukturen deutete sich mit der Gründung von Parteien und der Parlamentarisierung an. Durch die deutsche Einheit wurde die ostdeutsche schließlich in die bestehende civil society der Bundesrepublik überführt.' (Autorenreferat)

'By applying the term 'civil society' to the internal evolution of the GDR, the dynamics of its initial oppression, its partial re-development, as well as its explosive comeback and consolidation, are demonstrated. Despite the abolition of civil society structures by the Socialist Unity Party (SED), critical minorities developed who supported such values. In autumn 1989 a process of self-liberation followed, which also went along with a re-institution of forms of civil society. Partly, older institutions were reinstated, and partly new ones were created. With the founding of political parties, and the revival of parliament, a break with the civil society structures which developed during the Peaceful Revolution took place. Through the German unification, East German society was finally transferred into the existing civil society of the Federal Republic.' (author's abstract)|
