Demokratisierung durch Bildpädagogik: Otto Neurath und Isotype

Democratisation by pictorial pedagogy: Otto Neurath and isotype
[journal article]

Sander, Günther

Abstract

'From the mid-1920s onwards, the sociologist and economist Otto Neurath (1882-1945) developed the Vienna method of pictorial statistics. During the time of emigration (1934-1945), the method turned into an International System of Typographic Picture Education (Isotype), which attracted international recognition. However, Neurath intended to create the pictorial language as an instrument for both intercultural communication and democratisation. This project only could be achieved in parts. At first, the essay provides an overview of the history of Neuraths pictorial pedagogy. Afterwards, the distinctive features of Isotype and the method of pictorial statistics are being discussed, where the article attempts explaining the current relevance. Three reasons are emphasized, why Neuraths efforts were not fully successful: first, the close interconnection between the project and the person; second, the changing media, societal and political contexts; and finally Neuraths less developed understanding of the contextuality and manipulability of pictures.'
