(Autorenreferat)... view less

'The fall in the amount of sick leave taken within companies that has been observed during the past years may be due to a variety of reasons. It is not necessarily an indication for the employees' improved health. On the contrary, it may be an indication of denial of illness on the part of the employee. The denial of illness may be related to personal reasons but also to the climate and the working conditions within a company. When illness is not acknowledged at company level this affects the employees' health behaviour. The article distinguishes between different forms of denial of illness. Identifying not only fear of losing a job and a damaging a career, but also how ignoring illness in the design of working conditions can prevent a health promoting attitude towards handling the symptoms of an illness. The instruments of health management offered by companies display a Janus face: from the perspective of those employees with potential health problems such instruments may be regarded as either assistance or a threat.'
