Rejecting substantializing and essentializing concepts of culture, an understanding of culture that is epistemologically and hermeneutically motivated is outlined. In this view, culture is seen as a perspective or orientation that makes it possible to understand human actions, mind, and other psychological phenomena in a context without which they would not be understandable. This context only becomes intelligible if it is subject to interpretation, that is, if it is understood as a multilayered text, a narrative, a novel with countless plots, perspectives, levels of time, and spheres of emotion. In Abgrenzung von einem substantialistischen und essentialistischen Konzept von Kultur wird ein Verständnis von Kultur skizziert, das erkenntnistheoretisch und hermeneutisch motiviert ist. Kultur erscheint dabei als eine Sichtweise oder Perspektive, die es erlaubt, menschliches Handeln, Bewusstsein und andere psychologische Phänomene in einem Zusammenhang zu sehen, ohne den sie unverständlich bleiben würden. Dieser Zusammenhang erschließt sich nur, indem man ihn interpretiert, und das heißt, indem man ihn zu verstehen versucht wie einen vielschichtigen Text, eine Erzählung, einen Roman mit zahllosen Handlungssträngen, Perspektiven, Zeitebenen und Gefühlssphären.
