This article describes how the rural population in the region of Pehunco in northern Benin perceive the changes in their natural environment. It characterizes the relationship between man and nature, especially perceptions referring to the forest. Religious conceptions of the forest, daily practices and local history are analysed by means of both local discourses and colonial archives. Thus a complex picture of different forest perceptions emerges. The article brings to light how contemporary perceptions were historically developed. It shows that the Baatombu, like many other West African populations, have a relationship with the forest, which is affected by ancestral traditions as well as by the local and international market. The analysis of the local discourse draws attention to the question of the importance of power considerations in the area of resource utilization. The vegetational change creates the necessity of negotiations between different segments of the population, especially between old and young, the old-established and the recently immigrated, as well as between the local population and the national government.... view less
