This article examines the persistence of EU scepticism and pro-Russian sentiment in northern Moldova, with a focus on the city of Bălţi and the influence of the populist and oligarchic figure Renato Usatîi. It explores how economic hardship, Soviet nostalgia and heritage, and linguistic divisions - particularly among Ukrainian-speaking communities who often feel neglected by the political centre - fuel resistance to EU integration. The analysis highlights how oligarchs and populist leaders exploit regional identity, socio-economic grievances, and feelings of marginalisation to consolidate their influence. These actors amplify political polarisation by presenting themselves as defenders of local interests against a distant, EU-oriented political centre. In the context of ongoing geopolitical tensions and internal polarisation, this article underscores the intersection of domestic discontent, regional identity, and populism in shaping Northern Moldova's political landscape.de
