This article examines the persistence of EU scepticism and pro-Russian sentiment in northern Moldova, with a focus on the city of Bălţi and the influence of the populist and oligarchic figure Renato Usatîi. It explores how economic hardship, Soviet nostalgia and heritage, and linguistic divisions - particularly among Ukrainian-speaking communities who often feel neglected by the political centre - fuel resistance to EU integration. The analysis highlights how oligarchs and populist leaders exploit regional identity, socio-economic grievances, and feelings of marginalisation to consolidate their influence. These actors amplify political polarisation by presenting themselves as defenders of local interests against a distant, EU-oriented political centre.
