The classroom space is an important element aimed at improving the quality of teaching and learning. Indeed, evidence shows that this element affects university students' learning process, performance, satisfaction, and motivation. However, little is known about how it mediates the teaching process under the current university educational paradigm that is focused on stimulating active student learning. This research aims to analyse the impact of classroom spaces on teaching practice to establish whether the space determines the pedagogical model employed by the teacher. For this, a systematic review was carried out following the PRISMA guidelines. The results suggest that the spatial designs influence the pedagogical method and that while active classrooms and methodologies enhance student development and performance, both should be aligned to optimize student outcomes. We conclude that the classroom space guides the pedagogical model adopted by the teacher, that is, active spaces facilitate active methodologies, while traditional spaces favour traditional practices. To promote the changes in the teaching model demanded by the European Higher Education Area, it is necessary to implement active classrooms and train teachers in the methodologies associated with these spaces.... view less
