Nachdem er über Jahrhunderte hinweg kaum kunstfähig war, avanciert der Schwangerschaftsabbruch in der Weimarer Republik zu einem massentauglichen literarischen Sujet. Wie eng diese Entwicklung mit zeitgenössischen sozialpolitischen Debatten verbunden ist, lässt sich an Irmgard Keuns Roman Gilgi, eine von uns (1931) nachvollziehen, der ein so signifikantes wie prominentes Beispiel dieses literarischen Trends bildet. Der Roman kreist um den topischen Konflikt von "Neuer Frau" und Mutterschaft, wirft Schlaglichter auf die sozialen Effekte des Paragrafen 218 und greift dabei das Muster der proletarischen "Abtreibungstragödie" gezielt auch in seiner Klischeehaftigkeit auf. Seine nachhaltig kontroverse Wirkung verdankt der Text einer gleitenden Perspektivierung von Ansichten, die die seinerzeit so virulente Spannung zwischen pronatalistischer Politik, neomalthusianischen Positionen und den Selbstentwürfen moderner Frauen nicht auflöst.... view less

After being largely absent from artistic representation for centuries, abortion emerged as a literary subject that was suitable for the mass market of the Weimar Republic. The close connection between this development and contemporary sociopolitical debates is evident in Irmgard Keun's novel Gilgi, eine von uns (1931), a significant and prominent example of this literary trend. The novel deals with the topical conflict between the "New Woman" and motherhood, sheds light on the social effects of section 218 of the German Criminal Code (on abortion), and deliberately adopts the newly established pattern of the "abortion tragedy" in clichéd form. The novel's lastingly controversial impact stems from a fluid perspectivization of viewpoints that does not resolve the contemporary tensions between pronatalist policies, neo-Malthusian positions and the self-conceptions of modern women.... view less
