Ethnicity and belonging: an overview of a study of Cuban, Haitian and Guatemalan immigrants to Florida

Dieser Artikel bietet einen Überblick über eine interdisziplinäre qualitative Studie zu persönlichen Bedeutungen und öffentlichen Ausdrucksweisen von Zuhause, Ethnizität und Zugehörigkeitsgefühl von Immigrant/innen in Florida, die aus Kuba, Haiti und Guatemala stammen. Wir präsentieren die theoretischen Grundlagen der Studie, eine Beschreibung der angewandten Interview- und Beobachtungsmethoden und die wesentlichen Themen, die die Analyse der biografischen Interviews erbracht hat. Der Aufsatz bietet einen Einstieg zu vier Artikeln in dieser Schwerpunktausgabe, welche dann für jede der Bevölkerungsuntergruppen den Fokus gezielt auf ein bedeutendes Thema richten.

This article provides an overview of an interdisciplinary qualitative study that explored the personal meanings and public expressions of home, ethnicity and belonging among Cuban, Haitian and Guatemalan immigrants to Florida. We present the theoretical bases for the study, a description of the interview and observational methods employed, and the major themes discerned in the analyses of the biographical interviews. This paper provides a gateway to the four articles in this special issue, which will then focus specifically on one major theme found to be important for each of the sub-groups.

Este artículo ofrece una visión general de un estudio cualitativo interdisciplinario que explora los significados personales y expresiones públicas sobre lo que es la casa (lugar de origen), etnicidad y sentimiento de pertenencia entre los inmigrantes de Cuba, Haití y Guatemala a Florida, Estados Unidos. Se presentan las bases teóricas del estudio, una descripción de los métodos de entrevista y de observación empleados además de los principales temas discernientes en el análisis de las entrevistas biográficas. Este documento proporciona una puerta de entrada a los cuatro artículos en este número especial, los cuales se centrarán específicamente en un tema clave considerado como importante por cada uno de los sub-grupos.
