Review Essay: Getting with the Act of Action Research

Abstract

Action Research (AR) erachtet sich selbst als Bereich von theoretischer und praktischer Bedeutung. Für die Identität dieses Bereichs ist essenziell wichtig, dass Forschungsteilnehmer/innen als engagierte, subjekthafte und an der Forschungsarbeit partizipierende Personen anerkannt werden, die im Verlauf des Forschens dazulernen und sich verändern. Zugleich wird die Verfügbarkeit einer ernstzunehmenden und zuverlässigen Methodologie von außen oft bezweifelt bzw. die Validität der mittels AR gewonnen Ergebnisse wird infrage gestellt. Kommt AR zum Einsatz, häufen sich Hinweise auf Qualifikationen und Rechtfertigungen, da die Forschenden teilweise Probleme haben, ihre Vorgehensweisen in disziplinären und methodischen Feldern zu behaupten, die auf (prüfbare) Validität und (angemessene) Methoden Wert legen. Selbst als Praktikerin in der Stadtentwicklung tätig, habe ich AR-Ansätze für das Design und die Umsetzung diverser Projekte genutzt. Als Wissenschaftlerin konnte ich AR-Ansätze für die Datenerhebung einsetzen und in der Folge gemeinsam mit Praktiker/innen aus dem Gesundheitssektor Interventionen konzipieren und umsetzen. Auch aus diesen Gründen war ich sehr gespannt, Neues über aktuelle Entwicklungen im Bereich AR zu lesen und das Buch mit Blick auf seinen Hauptzweck zu prüfen: als "Handbuch", um Forschung und Praxis anzuleiten. Insgesamt enthält der Band 32 Kapitel zu AR-Theorie und -Praxis, verbunden mit Praxisbeispielen. Ich habe all dies mit besonderem Interesse daran gelesen, wo, wie und warum ich die jeweiligen Inhalte nutzen würde und ob sie bieten, was ein Forschungshandbuch leisten sollte: praktische Unterstützung bei Design, Anwendung und Analyse unter Verwendung von AR. Alles in allem bietet das Handbuch tatsächlich detaillierte Beispiele von Forschungsprojekten und zum Prozess des Forschens, aber für künftige Ausgaben würde ich mir wünschen, dass zum einen komplementären Methoden, die im Rahmen von AR-Studien genutzt werden können und zum anderen der Analyse von Daten, die aus AR-Projekten hervorgehen, mehr Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt wird.

Action research (AR) prides itself on being a field of both theoretical and practical inquiry. Its scholarly identity rests heavily on framing participants as engaged, subjective, and participatory beings who learn and change through research processes. Yet, action research struggles to be considered a rigorous methodological field of inquiry and certainly there have been those who have raised questions about its validity as a research method. Where action research is used, qualifications and justifications abound as people struggle to have their research heard over other disciplines and techniques that claim more validity or appropriateness of methods. As a community development practitioner, I have employed AR approaches in the design and application of projects. As an academic, I have had the opportunity to design and facilitate meetings using participatory action research methods for data collection and to develop ground-up interventions with primary health care professionals. Therefore, I was eager to read about AR theoretical developments and to examine this text for its core purpose: as a "handbook" to guide research and practice. The handbook boasts 32 chapters covering theory, practices, exemplars, and skills which I reviewed with particular attention to where, how, and why I would use the content and whether it offered what a research handbook should—practical assistance in design, application, analysis, and synthesis for AR. Overall, the handbook does provide extensive examples about research projects and process. In future editions though, I would like to see more attention to complementary methods that can be employed in AR and attention to methods for the analysis of data generated via action research approaches.

La investigación acción (IA) se enorgullece de ser un campo de investigación tanto teórico como práctico. Su identidad académica recae en gran medida en pensar a los participantes como seres participativos, subjetivos y comprometidos que aprenden y cambian a través de los procesos de la investigación. Sin embargo, la investigación acción lucha por ser considerado un campo riguroso de investigación metodológica y, desde luego, ha habido quienes han puesto en duda su validez como método de investigación. Allí donde se utiliza la investigación acción, las calificaciones y las justificaciones abundan en tanto que la gente lucha para que su investigación sea escuchada entre otras disciplinas y técnicas que proponen mejorar la validez y la idoneidad de los métodos. Como un profesional del desarrollo comunitario, he empleado el enfoque de la IA en el diseño y aplicación de proyectos. Como académico, he tenido la oportunidad de diseñar y organizar reuniones utilizando los métodos de la investigación acción participativa para la recogida de datos y para intervenir en el terreno junto con profesionales de la salud de atención primaria. Por lo tanto, yo estaba muy interesado en leer acerca de los dearrollos teóricos de la IA y examinar este texto considerando su objetivo fundamental: como un "manual" para orientar la investigación y la práctica. El manual consta de 32 capítulos que abarcan teoría, prácticas, ejemplos, y competencias que he revisado con especial atención para ver dónde, cómo y por qué podría utilizar el contenido y lo que debería ofrecer un manual de investigación: asistencia práctica en el diseño, aplicación, análisis y una síntesis de la IA. El manual brinda muchos ejemplos acerca de proyectos y procesos de investigación, aunque es deseable mayor atención al análisis de datos generados mediante la IA en ediciones futuras.
