Migrants and Their Experiences of Time: Edward T. Hall Revisited

Abstract

In diesem Aufsatz kehren wir zum wissenschaftlichen Erbe von Edward T. HALL zurück und überdenken seinen Beitrag zum Themenfeld interkultureller Kommunikation. Wir prüfen die Anwendbarkeit der Theorien von HALL und ihre Kompatibilität mit anderen, neueren Methoden. Im Zentrum unseres Interessens stehen die zeitliche Dimension von Kultur und insbesondere die temporalen Erfahrungen im Verlauf von Migrationsprozessen. Im ersten Teil des Artikels analysieren wir sechs Fälle von deutschen und russischen Arbeitsmigrant/innen nach den methodologischen Vorschlägen von HALL. Im zweiten Teil kombinieren wir HALLs Methoden mit der phänomenologischen Perspektive von SCHÜTZ. Auf diese Weise gelingt es uns, die Erfahrung und das Erleben "des Anderen" durch die zeitliche Dimension zu begreifen.

In this paper we reassess the scientific heritage of Edward T. HALL and his contribution to the area of intercultural communication. The key objectives of our study are to demonstrate the applicability of HALL's theory of culture to empirical research and to establish its compatibility with other methods. Specifically, we propose that Alfred SCHÜTZ's phenomenology of sociality be taken as an extension to HALL. The connection between HALL and SCHÜTZ is made possible by the mutual emphases on the temporal dimension of culture and the temporal aspects of migration. With these foci we analyze six narratives by two groups of migrants: German and Russian. By combining HALL's theory of the cultural time with SCHÜTZ's phenomenological perspective on time and the Other and then applying them to empirical data, we show the terms in which different cultures experience time.

En este artículo reexaminamos la herencia científica de Edward T. HALL y su contribución al área de la comunicación intercultural. Objetivos centrales de nuestro estudio son demostrar la aplicabilidad de las teorías de la cultura de HALLa la investigación empírica y establecer su compatibilidad con los otros métodos. Específicamente proponemos que la fenomenología de Alfred SCHÜTZ ha de entenderse como una extensión a HALL. La conexión entre HALL y SCHÜTZ es posible por el énfasis mutuo sobre la dimensión temporal de la cultura y los aspectos temporales de la migración. Enfocándonos en ello analizamos seis narrativas de dos grupos de migrantes: alemanes y rusos. Al combinar la teoría del tiempo cultural de HALL con la perspectiva fenomenológica del tiempo y del Otro de SCHÜTZ, y aplicándolas a datos empíricos, mostramos los términos en que la experiencia del tiempo difiere entre culturas.
