Based on the ethnographic data of a pilot study with German expatriate families in Paraguay who are sceptical of the state, the article asks about the conditions of the possibility of establishing research relationships in a field in which the ethnographer and the researched know about mutual repugnance. Borrowing from the figures of "repugnant others" and different "modes of positionality", it explores how emic and etic perspectives can be negotiated and represented in fields of ideological inequality. The article discusses the consequences of methodological and epistemological positioning and comments on participatory ethnographic research approaches in the face of complex positionalities. In addition, suggestions are made for the analytical differentiation of ethnographic positionality under conditions of ideological inequality and a plea is made for methodological pluralism in research on (at least) state-sceptical milieus.... view less
