In the heart of East Africa, Ethiopia's ambitious Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) stands as a symbol of progress and controversy, casting a long shadow over the geopolitics of the Nile River basin. This $5 billion hydroelectric project on the Blue Nile promises to revolutionize Ethiopia's energy landscape, offering over 5,000 megawatts of renewable electricity upon completion. The GERD represents a cornerstone of economic development for a nation striving to industrialize and improve living standards.
However, downstream, Egypt and Sudan view the dam with increasing apprehension. Egypt, heavily reliant on the Nile for 95% of its freshwater needs, fears potential disruptions to its agricultural sector and domestic water supply. Sudan, situated between the two nations and amidst internal conflict, sees both opportunities and risks associated with the dam.
