A Narrative-Developmental Approach to Early Emotions

Abstract

Innerhalb der letzten Jahrzehnte wurde dem Begriff der Narration eine große Aufmerksamkeit zuteil, gefolgt von der Entwicklung unterschiedlicher narrationsanalytischer Modelle, so dass teilweise bereits von einer "narratological renaissance" (e.g., CURRIE, 1998; HERMAN, 1999) die Rede ist. Versuche, diese Modelle im Feld der frühen Kindheitsentwicklung anzuwenden, scheinen allerdings bisher beschwerlich. Dies gilt insbesondere für die Nutzung des Konzeptes der Narration (als theoretischer Rahmen und als methodische Strategie) im Rahmen von Untersuchungen zu psychologischen Prozessen, die dem Spracherwerb vorausgehen. Mit dem vorliegenden Beitrag soll ein systematischer Ansatz zur frühen Emotionsgenese vorgestellt werden, der narrationsanalytischen Konzepten verpflichtet ist. Hierzu wird zunächst kurz die relevante Literatur diskutiert und dann mit dem hier vertretenen narrativ-entwicklungspsychologischen Ansatz in Verbindung gesetzt. Dieser Ansatz geht davon aus, dass Narrationen und Persönlichkeitsentwicklung unauflösbar miteinander verbunden sind, und dass Narrationen im Lebenslauf sukzessive aus dem Kommunikationsgeschehen gebildet werden. Anschließend werden narrationsanalytische Verfahrensschritte vorgestellt, die von der Autorin im Rahmen einer Untersuchung zur Emotionsgenese in Eltern-Baby-Beziehungen entwickelt wurden. Es wird gezeigt, dass der beschriebene narrativ-entwicklungspsychologische Ansatz eine konzeptuell fundierte qualitative Forschungsstrategie bereithält, um auf einer mikroanalytischen Ebene Prozesse der Emotionsentwicklung und die diesen inhärente Genese von Narrationen zu untersuchen.

Over the past decades a great deal of attention has been dedicated to the broadening and diversification of the notion of narratives, which lead to a variety of models for narrative analysis and encouraged some to speak of a "narratological renaissance" (e.g., CURRIE, 1998; HERMAN, 1999). However, the application of these concepts to early development has faced a major challenge—the use of narratives (as both a theoretical framework and a methodological tool) to examine psychological processes prior to the acquisition of language. The present contribution offers a systematic approach to examine early emotional development grounded on narrative traditions. I begin by briefly presenting the relevant literature and linking it with the narrative-developmental approach proposed herein. This approach, I contend, implies that narratives and development are inextricably anchored to one another as narratives evolve over time through communication processes. I then describe within the narrative analysis the steps that I have developed to investigate emotions in the context of parent-toddler relationships. Thus, the narrative-developmental approach discussed aims to provide a conceptually grounded qualitative methodology to microscopically investigate the development of emotions and to demonstrate the inherently emergent nature of narratives.

En las últimas décadas se ha prestado gran atención a la ampliación y diversificación de la noción de narrativas que conducen a una variedad de modelos para análisis narrativo, lo que ha estimulado a algunos a hablar de un "renacimiento narratológico " (ej., CURRIE, 1998; HERMAN, 1999). Sin embargo, la aplicación de estos conceptos al desarrollo temprano ha enfrentado un gran reto el empleo de narrativas (como marco teórico y como herramienta metodológica) para examinar procesos psicológicos previos a la adquisición del lenguaje. La presente contribución ofrece un enfoque sistemático para examinar el desarrollo emocional temprano fundamentándose en tradiciones narrativas. Comenzaré por presentar brevemente la literatura relevante para luego vincularla con el enfoque narrativo evolutivo aquí propuesto. Sostengo, de acuerdo con este enfoque, que las narrativas y el desarrollo están inextricablemente relacionadas entre sí, dado que las narrativas evolucionan en el tiempo a través de procesos comunicativos. Luego describo dentro del análisis narrativo los pasos que he desarrollado para investigar las emociones en el contexto de las relaciones paterno-infantiles. Así, el enfoque narrativo-evolutivo discutido aspira a proveer una metodología cualitativa conceptualmente fundamentada para investigar, a nivel microscópico, el desarrollo de emociones y demostrar la naturaleza inherentemente emergente de las narrativas.
