Review: Ken Plummer (2001). Documents of Life 2: An Invitation to a Critical Humanism

Abstract

Mit Documents of Life 2 legt Ken PLUMMER eine völlig überarbeitete, teilweise neu abgefasste Version seines klassischen Werkes Documents of Life von 1983 vor. Diese ausgezeichnete Einführung in die qualitative biographische Forschung (insbesondere in ihrer soziologischen Ausrichtung) hat zwei wesentliche Bestandteile: Im ersten Teil werden verschiedene Forschungstypen, Datenquellen und Entwicklungslinien innerhalb der biographischen Forschung dargestellt. Der zweite Teil widmet sich den einzelnen Forschungsstationen, wie z.B. der Datenerhebung, der Datenauswertung und dem Prozess des Schreibens. Eine Stärke ist PLUMMERs Bemühen, auch neue Entwicklungen im Rahmen biographischen Forschung in seine Darlegungen einzubeziehen, hierzu gehört der Einfluss des Narrative turn auf die Geisteswissenschaften ebenso wie Ansätze und Folgerungen aus feministischen oder aus der Postmodernismus-Debatte. Das Buch ist zugleich eine ausgezeichnete Einführung für Noviz(inn)en und ein ertragreicher Fundus für erfahrene Forschende. Ein zentrales Thema, das dem gesamten Buch unterliegt, ist PLUMMERs Überzeugung, dass ein revidierter "kritische Humanismus" sich am ehesten als Grundlage biographischer Forschungsarbeiten eignet. Doch so verlockend diese Perspektive auch erscheint, sie ist wegen der hier vollzogenen Überbetonung des Individuums nicht unproblematisch. Trotz dieser Einschränkung handelt es sich bei Documents of Life 2 um ein hervorragendes Werk und um eine mustergültige Überarbeitung eines Klassikers.

PLUMMER's book is a substantially revised edition of his now classic 1983 Documents of Life. It is an outstanding introduction to the field of qualitative biographical research, particularly in sociology. The text can be broadly divided into two parts. Firstly, a conceptual overview outlining different types of biographic research, different types of documents, as well as reviews of major developments in the field. The second part focuses on the research process, collecting and managing data, and writing. A major strength is PLUMMER's engagement with new developments in the field, particularly the "narrative turn" in the social sciences and insights from feminism and postmodernism. While the book is an excellent introduction, experienced researchers will also gain from the inclusive overview that PLUMMER provides. Underpinning the entire book is PLUMMER's belief that a revised "critical humanism" is the most appropriate basis from which to study lives. While this is a seductive notion, it is suggested by the reviewer that "critical humanism" is nonetheless problematic as it cannot avoid overemphasizing the individual. This does not detract from an outstanding book and an exemplary revision.

El libro de PLUMMER es una edición substancialmente revisada de su ahora clásico "Documentos de Vida" de 1983. Es una introducción excelente al campo de investigación biográfica cualitativa, particularmente en sociología. El texto puede ser dividido ampliamente en dos partes. La primera, una visión conceptual que perfila tipos diferentes de investigación biográfica, tipos diferentes de documentos, así como las revisiones de los mayores desarrollos en el campo. La segunda enfoca el proceso de investigación, la recolección de datos, la organización de datos y la escritura. La mayor fuerza, es el compromiso de PLUMMER con los nuevos desarrollos en el campo, particularmente con el "giro narrativo" en las ciencias sociales y los insight del feminismo y postmodernismo. A pesar de que el libro es una excelente introducción, los investigadores experimentados también se beneficiarán con la visión global que PLUMMER proporciona. Todo el libro está apuntalando la creencia de PLUMMER de que un "humanismo crítico" revisado es la base más apropiada para estudios de vidas. A pesar de que ésta es una seductora noción, se sugiere que el "humanismo crítico" es a pesar de todo problematico ya que no puede evitar enfatizar lo individual. Esto no desmerece un excelente libro y a una revisión ejemplar.
