The Integration of Qualitative Data Analysis Software in Research Strategies: Resistances and Possibilities

Abstract

Auch wenn designierte Software zur Unterstützung qualitativer Datenanalyseprozesse schon seid mehr als einem Jahrzehnt verfügbar ist, wird sie im Vergleich mit ihren Möglichkeiten nur begrenzt eingesetzt. Die Anzahl der Forschungsprojekte, die mit QDA-Programmen arbeiten, steigt zwar ständig, aber nur wenige Forscher(rinnen) nutzen das gesamte Potential dieser Programme. Um dies zu verdeutlichen, wird zunächst die Dynamik, die dem Akzeptanzprozess technologischer Innovation zugrunde liegt, diskutiert. Im Anschluss daran wird ein Projekt präsentiert, in dem ein QDA-Programm (QSR NVivo /QSR NVivo Merge) nicht wie oft üblich nur ad hoc zur Unterstützung traditioneller Vorgehensweisen eingesetzt, sondern in den Forschungsprozess integriert wurde, d.h. die Möglichkeiten der Software wurden bei der Planung der praktischen Details in jeder Phase berücksichtigt. Eine solche Integration kann die Zusammenarbeit im Forschungsteam stärken und öffnet Möglichkeiten zur Exploration von analytischen Dimensionen, die sonst nicht vorstellbar wären.

Even though dedicated qualitative data analysis programs have been widely available for more than a decade, their use is still relatively limited compared with their full potential. The proportion of research projects relying on them appears to be steadily increasing but very few researchers are known to fully exploit their capabilities. After commenting on the dynamics of user's adoption of technological innovations, this article presents an instance where a qualitative analysis program suite (QSR NVivo and QSR NVivo Merge) was not only used as an ad-hoc appendage to a traditional strategy but fully integrated in the research project, insisting on the practical details pertaining to the use of the software's capabilities. It discusses how this integration can facilitate collaborative teamwork and open the exploration of analytic dimensions difficult to envision without it.

Aunque desde hace más de una década han existido programas para el análisis de datos cualitativos, su uso es todavía relativamente limitado si se toma en cuenta el potencial que tienen. Pareciera que la proporción de proyectos de investigación que confían en ellos está creciendo, pero se conocen pocos investigadores que exploten completamente sus capacidades. Después de comentar sobre la dinámica del usuario para adoptar innovaciones tecnológicas, este artículo presenta un caso en el cual un programa de análisis de datos cualitativos (QSR Nvivo y QSR NVivo Merge) no solamente se usó como un complemento ad-hoc de una estrategia tradicional, sino que se integró completamente en el proyecto de investigación, insistiéndose en los detalles prácticos pertinentes al uso de las capacidades del programa. Se discute cómo esta integración puede facilitar el trabajo colaborativo de equipo y abrir la exploración de dimensiones analíticas difícil de ver sin ésta.
