Review Essay: Die Raumwirksamkeit neuer Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien

Abstract

WERSIG systematisiert in seiner Einführung das Feld der Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien anhand technischer Kriterien auf nachvollziehbare und übersichtliche Weise. Von seiner Darstellung ausgehend wird in diesem Beitrag nach der sozialen Einbettung der Technologien, insbesondere nach ihrer Raumwirksamkeit gefragt. Entgegen dem beispielsweise in der Internetforschung verbreiteten Topos der "Raumlosigkeit" wird gezeigt, dass der "Cyberspace" durchaus Rückbindung an und Einfluss auf den realen Raum hat. Neu entstehende Zentrum-Peripherie-Strukturen, räumliche Ordnungsvorstellungen und raumbezogene Informations- und Kommunikationsangebote sind Beispiele dafür, dass die räumlichen Auswirkungen von Technologien differenziert betrachtet werden müssen.

The reviewed book is a systematic and well-written introduction to the field of information and communication technologies. Starting from WERSIG's focus on technical aspects, this paper concentrates on one dimension of the social context of technology: its influence on space. Issues of "placelessness" or "end of space" are discussed, especially in connection with the Internet; they fail, however, to recognize the various connections between "cyberspace" and real space. For example, the technological infrastructure and its spatial distribution constitute structures of centre and periphery. Additionally, contents such as Community Networks and City Guides directly refer to real space, thus adding another dimension to "the local.

El libro revisado es una introducción sistemática y bien escrita al campo de la información y tecnologías de la comunicación. Empezandodesde el enfoque WERSIGen los aspectos técnicos, este documento concentra en una dimensión de lo social el contexto de la tecnología: su influencia en el espacio. Asuntos como la "pérdida de lugar" o "el fin del espacio" son discutidos, especialmente en relación con el Internet. Ellos fallan, sin embargo al no reconocer varias conexiones entre el "ciberespacio" y el espacio real. Por ejemplo, la infraestructura tecnológica y su distribución espacial constituyen estructuras de centro y periferia. Adicionalmente, los contenidos como por ejemplo, redes decomunidades y guías de ciudades, directamente se refieren al espacio real, por lo tanto añaden otra dimensión a lo local.
