Review Essay: Auto/Biography as Method: Dialectical Sociology of Everyday Life

Abstract

Our Lives as Databases ist das Produkt eines Forschungsprojekts, in dem die teilnehmenden Autoren das kollektive Schreiben und Analysieren ihrer Autobiographien als Medium zum Praktizieren akademischer Soziologie benutzen. In diesem Beitrag beschreibe ich die Struktur und den Inhalt dieses ungewöhnlichen und sehr interessanten Buches und stelle meine Lesart anhand der exemplarischen Analyse eines der Kapitel dar. Obwohl der Herausgeber des Sammelbandes überzeugend für das kollektive Schreiben und Analysieren von Autobiographien als Verfahren wissenschaftlicher Soziologie argumentiert, schlage ich dennoch einen eher dialektischen Ansatz vor: In diesem Ansatz werden sowohl Individuum und Gesellschaft als auch Selbst und Anderer als dialektische Einheit theoretisiert. Meine Verfahrensweise stellt daher eine zusätzliche Begründungsform für das Vorgehen der am Projekt Our Lives as Databases beteiligten Autoren dar. Als ein reflexives Moment meiner Vorgehensweise lehne ich mich an die Genres und Schreibtechniken der Autoren an.

Our Lives as Database is the outcome of a project, in which the participant authors practice sociology by writing and analyzing their autobiographies. I review structure and content of the book and provide a sample analysis of one contribution. While the editor of the book makes a convincing argument why writing and analyzing autobiographies collectively is a suitable method for doing sociology, I propose the consideration of a more dialectical perspective on the issue that makes the (dialectical) relations between individual and society and Self and Other more explicit, and provide additional reasons for the feasibility of the project described. As a reflexive moment fitting the context of this review essay, I draw on the same writing genres and techniques as the authors.

Nuestras vidas como bases de datos son el producto de un proyecto en el cual los autores participantes practican sociología mediante la escritura y el análisis de sus autobiografías. Reviso la estructura y el contenido del libro y ofrezco una muestra de análisis de una contribución. Mientras que el editor del libro nos da un argumento convincente de por qué escribir y analizar autobiografías colectivamente es un método apropiado para hacer sociología, yo propongo la consideración de una perspectiva más dialéctica en el punto que hace más explícitas las relaciones (dialécticas) entre individuo y sociedad y entre el ser y el otro, y proporciona razones adicionales para la factibilidad del proyecto descrito. Como un momento reflexivo apropiado al contexto de este ensayo, yo utilizo el mismo género de escritura y técnicas que los autores.
