The rural societies of Aurasian mountain (Algeria): between tribal affiliation and globalization

Abstract

The Aurasian Mountain has a very specific face in Algeria: eccentric situation, powerful reliefs, historical role, global poverty. This region is now evolving rapidly (Bessaoud, 2006). One cannot gauge this region like the paintings drawn up 50 years ago (Arcy, 1965). Is it traditional, or modern? It is difficult to answer because it realizes the paradox of being both at the same time. Fully. It has the particularity of plunging its social roots into old structures (sense of belonging to the group, solidarity, functioning on a tribal scale) and responding to the characteristics of the modern world, and understood in its definitions of globalization (specialization, networks long-distance, relationships).
