Review Essay: The Dialectic of the General and Particular in Social Science Research and Teaching Praxis

Abstract

Cross-Cultural Research Methods will zwar eine Einführung in das "how-to-do" der transkulturellen Forschung sein, konzentriert sich aber auf quantitative Methoden von Daten zweiter Hand in der Wissenkonstruktion. Das Buch verfängt sich zweifach in der Dialektik des Allgemeinen und des Spezifischen, indem es sich auf das Erstere konzentriert und dabei verfehlt, die Rolle des Letzteren sowohl in der Wissenschaft als auch in der Methodenlehre angemessen zu behandeln. Weil ich weiß, dass die Studierenden in meinen graduierten Methodenseminaren an diesem Buch kein Gefallen fänden, würde ich es weder selbst auswählen, noch kann ich es Anderen als eine Ressource zum Lehren von (quantitativen) Methoden- oder Forschungsdesignkursen empfehlen.

Cross-Cultural Research Methods pretends to be a primer on the "how to" of conducting cross-cultural research, but focuses only on quantitative methods that use secondary data in the service of generating knowledge. The book is caught twice in the dialectic of the general and the specific, by putting all its eggs into the former basket and failing to recognize the role of the latter both in research itself and in the teaching of research methods to its readers. Because I know that the students in my graduate research methods course would fail to appreciate the book, I would neither select nor recommend it to others as a resource in teaching (quantitative) research methods or research designs courses.

Los métodos de investigación transcultural pretenden ser lo primero en el "cómo" realizar investigación transcultural, aunque enfocándose solamente en métodos cuantitativos que utilizan datos secundarios a fin de generar conocimiento. Este libro se encuentra atrapado doblemente en la dialéctica de lo general y lo específico, aunque al poner todos sus huevos en la canasta de lo general falla al reconocer el papel de lo específico en la investigación misma y en la enseñanza de los métodos. Dado que conozco a los estudiantes en mi curso de grado en métodos de investigación, no quiero ni seleccionar el libro ni recomendarlo a otros como un recurso en la enseñanza de métodos de investigación (cuantitativa) o cursos sobre diseños de investigación.
