Review Essay: "If Somebody's with Something Every Day They've Gotta Learn Something—Or They're Just Out to Lunch": The Dialectics of Ethnography as a Way of Being

Abstract

Ethnography: A Way of Seeing richtet sich an Student(inn)en der Anthropologie und an Forscher(innen) anderer Disziplinen mit dem Ziel, ihnen nahezubringen, wie die Ethnographie als Disziplin sich von der Ethnographie als Feldmethode unterscheidet. Obwohl ich bestreite, dass die genannte Leserschaft wirklich diejenige ist, die am meisten mit dem Buch anfangen kann – erfahrene Forscher(innen) werden den Inhalt mehr schätzen können – fand ich das Buch, dessen "Textur" ich in meinem Essay nachvollziehe, doch sehr empfehlenswert. Ich beziehe mich auf meine eigene Feldarbeit in einer Lachszuchtanlage als Auslegungshorizont und auf (authentische) ethnographische Darstellungsweisen, um einen dialektischen Rahmen zu artikulieren, der meinen Leser(inne)n erlaubt, mehrere Widersprüche zu situieren, die mir beim Lesen bewusst geworden sind.

Ethnography: A Way of Seeing addresses itself to students in anthropology and researchers in other professional fields, intending to help them in understanding what is distinctive about ethnography as a discipline rather than merely being another fieldwork technique. Although I contest the claim to the particular audience—experienced researchers will much more appreciate the different points Harry Wolcott makes—I found this a highly enjoyable book, the textual nature of which I attempted to reflexively capture in this review. Drawing on my own fieldwork in a fish hatchery as an interpretive horizon and on the techniques of ethnographic writing, I articulate a dialectical framework that allows readers to situate a number of contradictions that have become salient during my reading.

Etnografía: Una manera de ver se presenta a los estudiantes en antropología y a los investigadores en otros campos profesionales, con el propósito de ayudarles entender qué hay de distintivo sobre etnografía como una disciplina más bien que simplemente otra técnica del trabajo en el terreno. Aunque niego algún reclamo sobre el particular, los investigadores audiencia-experimentada apreciarán mucho más los varios puntos desarrollados por Harry Wolcott. – Yo considero que este es un libro muy agradable, cuya a naturaleza textual intenté capturar de manera reflexiva en esta revisión. Inspirándome en mi propio trabajo en el campo en un criadero de peces como horizonte interpretativo y en las técnicas de la escritura etnográfica, articulo una estructura dialéctica que permite a los lectores situar un número de contradicciones que han llegado a ser salientes durante mi lectura.
