Conference Essay: Public and Private Narratives

Abstract

Dieser Tagungsessay beschäftigt sich mit einer Konferenz über Erzählung. Das Feld der Erzählforschung ist von Natur aus interdisziplinär, was bestimmte Stärken und Schwächen zur Folge hat, die während der Konferenz evident geworden sind. So fehlte zwar teilweise Kohärenz angesichts der unzähligen Ansätze zur Definitionen von Narration und zur Erzählanalyse. Zugleich wurde aber auch das Potenzial sichtbar, das sich ergeben kann, wenn diese Schwäche überwunden wird und ein fruchtbarer Austausch entsteht in einem wahrhaft interdisziplinären Feld: Konzepte und Theorien können von einer Disziplin zur anderen "wandern" und dabei neue Bedeutung gewinnen sowie neue Einsichten ermöglichen.

This essay examines a conference on narrative. The field of narrative studies is by nature interdisciplinary, which leads to certain strengths and weaknesses, both of which were evident during the conference. On the one hand, as a result of the myriad approaches to and definitions of narrative and narrative analysis, the conference perhaps lacked a sense of coherence. However, the conference showed that overriding this weak­ness in narrative studies is the fruitful cross-fertilization that can occur when a field is truly interdisciplinary. Thus, concepts and theories can and do travel from one discipline to another, gaining new meaning and providing new insight on the way.

Este ensayo examina una conferencia sobre narrativa. El campo de los estudios narrativos es por naturaleza interdisciplinario, lo que le somete a ciertas fortalezas y debilidades, según fue evidenciado durante la conferencia. Por una parte, como resultado de los innumerables enfoques y las definiciones de narración y análisis narrativo, quizás la conferencia careció de cierta coherencia. En todo caso, la conferencia mostró que primordialmente esa debilidad de los estudios narrativos es la fructífera fertilización cruzada que tiene lugar cuando un campo es verdaderamente interdisciplinario. Así, los conceptos y las teorías pueden y están moviéndose de una disciplina a otra, ganando nuevos significados y proporcionando nuevas aportaciones por el camino.
