Abstract

Das Werk von COLE und KNOWLES ist zugleich eine Einführung in The Art of Life History Research, eine Sammlung hauptsächlich kanadischer Forschungsbeispiele und ein Manifest für eine durch Kunst inspirierte Sozialforschung. Es gliedert sich in zwei Teile: Im ersten Teil, den COLE und KNOWLES selbst verfasst haben, wird auf ca. 100 Seiten ein Überblick über das Forschungsgebiet "life history research" geboten und es werden einige Richtlinien für die Forschungspraxis benannt. Im zweiten Teil folgen 13 Kapitel unterschiedlicher Autorinnen und Autoren, in denen das Anwendungs- und Methodenspektrum lebensgeschichtlicher Forschung vorgestellt wird. Die Besonderheit, die das Buch von anderen Werken dieser Art unterscheidet, ist die Behandlung von kunstinspirierter und kunstfundierter Forschung. Hierin liegt der größte Nutzen des Buches, der es trotz einiger Kritik für interessierte Leserinnen und Leser empfehlenswert macht. Schwächen liegen darin, dass zu viel auf einmal gesagt werden soll, dass anschauliche Beispiele fehlen und dass der soziale Wert lebensgeschichtlicher Forschung zu wenig behandelt wird.

COLE and KNOWLES present a book that is simultaneously an introduction to the field, an edited collection of mainly Canadian examples of research issues emerging from the field and a manifesto for arts-informed research. The book is divided into two sections: the first part is written by COLE and KNOWLES and is 100+ pages pre­senting a useful overview of the life history field and providing guidelines for "doing" life history research; the second part consists of 13 edited chapters which demonstrate both the range of uses of life history research and the spectrum of methods employed. The particular focus of this book that distinguishes it from other life-history method books is its focus on the use of arts-informed research. This is the major strength of the book and, while the review raises some criticisms, it is worth reading it for this discussion. Its weak­nesses relate to its multiple purpose, its lack of visual exemplars and its limited engagement with issues such as the social value of life-history work.

COLE y KNOWLES presentan un libro que es simultáneamente una introducción al campo de investigación, una colección de ejemplos principalmente canadienses de aspectos de investigación emergentes en ese campo y un manifiesto a favor la investigación formada en las artes. El libro está dividido en dos secciones: la primera parte está escrita por COLE y KNOWLES y comprende 100 paginas que presentan una visión útil del campo de las historias de vida y aporta líneas de acción para "hacer" investigación de historias de vida; la segunda parte consiste en 13 capítulos con demostraciones del abanico de usos de la investigación en historias de vida y el espectro de los métodos empleados. El interés particular de este libro que lo distingue de otros libros sobre métodos de historias de vida es su focalización sobre el uso de la investigación formada en las artes. Esta es la principal fortaleza del libro y, si bien la reseña plantea algunas críticas, vale la pena leerlo para esa discusión. Su debilidad se relaciona a sus múltiples propósitos, su carencia de ejemplos visuales y su limitado compromiso con aspectos como los valores sociales del trabajo en historias de vida.
