Becoming a "Legitimate" Ancestor: A Sociocultural Understanding of a Sonless Jamnyeo's Life Story

Abstract

Im vorliegenden Text wird aus einer soziokulturellen Perspektive von der Lebensgeschichte einer 62jährigen koreanischen "Wasserfrau" (Jamnyeo: traditionelle "Taucherfrauen" auf der südkoreanischen Insel Jeju) berichtet und von deren Erfahrungen als bedeutungsloses Mitglied der Familie ihres Ehemanns. In die Analyse des im historischen und kulturellen Kontext der Insel verankerten Daseins der Jamnyeo werden insbesondere drei theoretische Aspekte einbezogen: soziokulturelle Verankerung, Kontinuität und Diskontinuität zwischen kollektiven und persönlichen "Kulturen", sowie gemeinsame Konstruktion. Aus soziokultureller Perspektive offenbaren die biografischen Schilderungen und die Lebensgeschichte der Jamnyeo aktive und zielorientierte Bestrebungen, ihre eher unbedeutende soziale Stellung zu verbessern. Auf individueller Ebene transformierte die Jamnyeo soziokulturelle Ansprüche von "tugendhafter Weiblichkeit" in Hilfsmittel, die ihren lebenslangen Bemühungen dienlich waren, von der Peripherie der Familie in deren Zentrum zu rücken. Auf der kollektiven Ebene offenbart die Biografie der Jamnyeo die dualistische Beschaffenheit soziokultureller "Stimmen", die die Art, wie Individuen ihr Leben (re-) konstruieren, auf zwei Arten beeinflussen: als lenkende und strukturierende "Mächte" einerseits und als Produkte, die von Individuen konstruiert und transformiert werden, andererseits.

The retrospective reflections of a sixty two year old sonless widow jamnyeo (traditional career ocean diving woman on Jeju Island, South Korea) on her experiences as a marginal figure in her late husband's family are examined from sociocultural perspectives. This paper presents sociocultural interpretative analyses of the jamnyeo's life events and her experiences lived in the island's historical and sociocultural contexts. Analyses focus on three theoretical notions: sociocultural embeddedness, continuity and discontinuity between collective and personal cultures, and joint constructions. The jamnyeo's storytelling and life story, from the perspective of sociocultural theory, reveals active, goal-oriented attempts to transform her marginal social position into a culturally virtuous one of "legitimate" ancestor. On an individual plane, the jamnyeo subjectively transformed sociocultural voices demanding virtuous womanhood into mediational tools catalyzing and facilitating her life-long struggle to transform her social position from the margins to the center of her husband's family. On a sociocultural plane, her story reveals the dualistic nature of sociocultural voices both as forces; guiding, influencing, and structuring the ways individuals construct and reconstruct their lives; and as products which active social agents construct and transform.

Se examinan desde perspectivas socioculturales las reflexiones retrospectivas de una viuda jamnyeo (carrera tradicional de la mujer buza en el océano, en la Isla Jeju, Corea del Sur) de sesenta y dos años y sin hijos, sobre sus experiencias como una figura marginal en la familia de su último marido. Este artículo presenta los análisis socioculturales interpretativos de los acontecimientos de vida de jamnyeo y sus experiencias vividas en los contextos históricos y socioculturales de la isla. El análisis se enfoca en tres nociones teóricas: enraizamiento sociocultural, continuidad y discontinuidad entre culturas colectivas y personales, y construcciones conjuntas. La narración del jamnyeo y la historia de la vida, desde la perspectiva de la teoría sociocultural, revela tentativas con objetivos orientados a transformar su posición social marginal en una virtuosa culturalmente con antepasado "legítimo". En sentido individual, el jamnyeo subjetivamente transformó las voces socioculturales que exigen la feminidad virtuosa en herramientas de mediación que catalicen y faciliten su lucha a lo largo de la vida para transformar su posición social desde los márgenes al centro de la familia de su marido. Desde un plano sociocultural, su historia revela la naturaleza dualista de voces socioculturales que actúan como fuerzas; dirigiendo, influyendo, y estructurando las vías individuales que construyen y reconstruyen sus vidas; y como productos que los agentes sociales activos construyen y transforman.
